Thanks to the more than 1,000 donors last year, the BEF was able to grant:

  • $18,000 in funding for the arts in BPS, including sending every fourth-grade student to a live performance of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and bringing in a range of professional musicians to work with high school students.
  • $12,500 in support for Character Education initiatives, including programming at Berkshire and Derby Middle Schools.
  • $7,000 for supporting mental health programs at both high schools.
  • Nearly $28,000 in grants for Makerspaces and STEAM-related programs, including robotics teams at every level, family nights at elementary schools, and support for the new Makerspace at Groves, with a commitment to match the funding at Seaholm next year.
  • Nearly $25,000 in funding to support reading and literacy initiatives at all levels, from supporting classroom libraries, to family nights to help struggling readings, to purchasing new collections of books for libraries.
The Birmingham Education Foundation is only able to offer this support to our schools because of you and hundreds more like you. Thank you for giving to support the excellent education happening in Birmingham Public Schools! If you'd like to make sure that you're included in next year's honor roll, click here to give today! You can also choose to join more than 250 BPS staff members in making a recurring donation to the BEF.

If you see any changes than need to be made to the honor roll, please email Alison Hendry at BEF@birmingham.k12.mi.us.

At the June 5th Board meeting, the Board named John Silveri as Interim Superintendent. Mr. Silveri retired from his position as Superintendent of the Waterford School District in 2015 and has since acted both as the Interim Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources as well as the Interim Deputy Superintendent for School Administration here in Birmingham Public Schools. We believe that as an experienced educational leader and someone who knows our community and culture, Mr. Silveri will provide a seamless leadership transition for our District in the year ahead.

John Silveri's career in public education began in 1978 and ended with his retirement in 2015. He served five Metropolitan Detroit area school districts as a teacher, counselor, principal, human resources director, assistant superintendent and superintendent. His 24 years as an administrator in Wayne, Oakland and St. Clair counties included almost 14 years in Allen Park Public Schools, five and a half years as Superintendent of Marysville Public Schools, and nearly five years as Superintendent of Waterford School District. Mr. SIlveri has served as Chairman of a North Central Association visiting accreditation team; and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Marysville Chamber of Commerce, the Waterford Coalition for Youth, The Detroit Metro Bureau and the Board of Education of the St. Clair County Intervention Academy. He has also served as President of the Wayne County Negotiators and Personnel Administrators Association and as President of the Rotary Club of Marysville. His education credentials include a bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University, a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University, and an education specialist degree from Wayne State University. He is a graduate of the MLI Superintendent Preparation Series Academy and the MASA Courageous Journey Program.
