Title: BPS 5th Grade Physical Education Run
School: District-wide 
Teacher: Derek DiGiovanni
Amount: $750

Provides students an opportunity to demonstrate the goals that they have worked on in class and outside of class to complete a mile run event.

Title: FIRST Robotics STEM 
School: Seaholm and Groves High School
Teacher: Amy Bowman
Amount: $6,000

​The FIRST robotics STEM grant gives students an opportunity to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Teams from all around the World compete in local and regional competitions in an effort to reach the FIRST Championship.

Title: Seaholm & Groves Book Clubs
School: Seaholm and Groves High Schools

​This is the official book club of the high school libraries and is student-run.  It promotes lifelong reading and engaging discussions which are student moderated and helps students to develop literary analysis skills.

Groves students have the opportunity to work in small groups with Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians in preparation for festivals and performances.

All 4th Grade students have an opportunity to visit the extraordinary orchestra hall in Detroit, MI to see and hear the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Title: Book Break and Virtual Author Visits

Inspires the next generation of readers by making bestselling author events accessible to all students.  Author talk events are livestreamed and include Q & A interaction between author and students.

Title: Derby and Berkshire Robotics

FTC is a state sponsored robotics program that is a part of FIRST, an internationally recognized organization. The program not only builds the technical skills involved in robotics such as mechanical engineering, wiring, coding, CAD, and machining, but also the soft skills such as problem solving, budgeting, collaboration, public speaking, fundraising, and much more.

Programmable robot cars provide students with a fun and enriching engineering experience.​

Title: Berkshire Band Room Technology Update

Title: Derby Indoor Herb Garden

Students learn to grow and maintain a herb garden utilizing key science principles and enjoy a rewarding hands on experience.

Title: Derby Literary Journal Paper Cutter

The paper cutter allows students to manufacture their own personal stories that they have written in class and publish a literary journal of student writing focused on personal anecdotes about gratitude.

Title: DECA State and District Competitions
School: Seaholm High School and Groves High School

​

DECA is a co-curricular competitive club that focuses on “preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.  Grant funding provided entry fees for both district and state competitions.

Title: BCS Robotics

An initiative to establish 10 new robotics teams, each equipped with state-of-the-art robotics kits. The teams have an opportunity to compete in Lawrence Tech's Robofest competition which is an annual event that showcases the incredible talent and innovation of budding robotics enthusiasts.

​The designated garden space at BCS presents endless opportunities to further their studies about pollinators and their importance in our environment and food supply and provides interdisciplinary hands-on learning experiences.

Title:  Empower Her: girls, sports, bright futures

An event that celebrates Women In Sports month by bringing together young women in Birmingham Public Schools to celebrate the value sport of any kind and at any level can have in their life, show them the possibilities that exist within sport as future career options, equip them to care for their bodies with nutrition, recovery and mental health education, and help them build lifelong confidence that transcends sport.

Instrument-specific local clinicians help assist in instruction and preparation for concerts. The clinicians give feedback and instruction to our band students in a small-group setting.

Funding of equipment for the new auxillary gym enhances and enriches the physical fitness and education opportunities and promotes wellness for our students. 

Title: Therapy Dog Vest

Custom vests with patches to celebrate sponsors as well as a BEF custom patch are provided for all therapy dogs district-wide to wear when they are out in the community together. Therapy dogs are an important resource that help students feel safe and relaxed while at school.

Title: Berkshire Amazing Shake

The Amazing Shake is an impactful and fun competition for students. This competition places an emphasis on teaching our students manners, discipline, respect, and how to conduct themselves in a professional environment.

Funding of new equipment necessary to launch E-sports teams in all high schools and middle schools in our district, allowing students who don't participate in traditional sports opportunities to compete.

​This will offer students the ability to learn through hands-on experience about natural ecosystems, food ecosystems, and plants and animals. In addition to the links to science, a school garden offers opportunities for social interaction and growth, physical activity, and the potential for further interest and appreciation for the foods we eat, how we get them, and the benefits they have for our bodies and minds.

The Annual Autism walk allows students, staff, and community members to gather at Barnum Park to raise awareness and celebrate student success in honor of autism acceptance month.

Title: Derby Amazing Shake

This competition places an emphasis on teaching our students manners, discipline, respect, and how to conduct themselves in a professional environment. During the Amazing Shake, students learn and develop professional qualities — from the mechanics of a proper handshake to how to “work the room” — so that they are able to present themselves exceptionally well for opportunities today and in the future.

Vox is an innovative product in that they are “the world’s first audio books that live in print books. The permanently attached VOX reader transforms an ordinary print book into an all-in-one read-along.


Title: Hosa State Competition
School: Seaholm High School

The Seaholm HOSA chapter has 11 students that qualified for states. Students attended a 2-day conference at the Grand Traverse Resort where they competed in events related to careers in medicine.

Title: BPS Broadcasting

The ​BPS Broadcasting Club provides real-life experiences in the broadcasting industry for Groves and Seaholm students who belong to the club.  Each production is student-driven and centered. The students learn about professional-quality equipment, its use, and its application for various audio and video productions.  With this new equipment, events district-wide can now be filmed and live streamed in-house.

Gives students the opportunity to hear from Jeff Olson who helps raise awareness for mental health issues in an effort to reduce the stigmas around them. 

Title: Deby Full Spectrum Camera

This camera, when properly modified, can see things we cannot. It can show how light affects our skin; how pollution is in our air; how the sun and stars are more than what they seem. The Camera provides a unique learning experience that will help students further their understanding of light.
