Mission & Funding

Mission
The Birmingham Education Foundation raises private funds from our community to ensure academic excellence and innovation in the Birmingham Public School District.

The BEF provides grants in four identified curriculum areas:

  • Academics – The BEF supports academic programs that help our students reach their full potential at all achievement levels.
  • Arts – The BEF supports programs that encourage each student to explore his or her unique creative vision.
  • Athletics – The BEF supports programs that improve fitness levels for every student and promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • Technology – The BEF makes investments in new technology that impacts the classroom and supports 21st Century learning for all of our students.

Funding Facts
Every fiscal school year since 2001-2002, the BPS district has faced a budget deficit. Cumulative cuts in the district’s operating budget now total over $30 million. As a result of Proposal A, Oakland County contributes over $659 million more in school tax dollars than our schools receive back from the state according to the Tri-County Alliance for Public Education. This means over 33 percent of Oakland County tax dollars are donated to support districts outside our county. The declining Michigan economy and rising health care and pension costs have combined to create a financial crisis for schools. We try to be diligent in keeping reductions away from the classroom; however, balancing the budget on an annual basis continues to be challenging.

Despite this fiscal reality, Birmingham Public Schools continue to be one of the best districts in the state. BPS students score high on state and national tests, and hundreds of BPS students earn Advanced Placement status for college credits each year. With a strong foundation in academics, our students are encouraged to explore their talents and rise to the top. Our students find great success in the classroom and through enrichment programs, funded in part by the Birmingham Education Foundation.

Parents and property owners in the BPS district understand the powerful link between exceptional schools and a strong, thriving community attractive to both businesses and residents. By raising private funds for public education, parents, staff and community members can build on the academic excellence that the BPS district provides students in our community, even in these challenging economic circumstances.
