Authors & Artist 2012

Author and Newberry Honor winner Gary Schmidt will spend some quality time with students in the Birmingham Public Schools this month as part of the Author & Artist in Residency Program. Sponsored by the Birmingham Education Foundation (BEF), the Author & Artist in Residency Program links children in the BPS district with a real author or artist for real-life exposure to the arts.

“We’re very excited to have such an accomplished author work with our students this year,” said Barbara Clark, Media Center Department Head for BPS. “This program exposes our students to real-life success stories and offers them a chance to ask questions and get answers about a subject that relates to what they are doing.”

Schmidt, a Michigan resident, is a two-time Newberry Honor winner, a 2011 National Book Festival finalist, and is currently an English professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Schmidt has authored “Okay for Now,” “Wednesday Wars,” “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy,” “Trouble,” “First Boy,” and others. During his time with BPS students, he will combine stories and the writing process for middle and high school students. .

Schmidt will also present “The Role of the Writer for Today’s Young Readers” at the Baldwin Public Library on Tuesday, April 24, from 7-8 p.m. It will be a time of stories. Students will get an inside look at how stories do what they do: how they entertain and what they mean. Parents and students are invited to this program and reception. Free raffle tickets will be available at the door for a chance to win an autographed copy of Schmidt’s book and a photo with the author.
